Tim's Walks: Victorian Philanthropy in the East End

Join Tim on a walk through the historic East End of Whitechapel and Stepney. At the end of the nineteenth century this was notorious as the poorest part of London. It was 'the ghetto', 'the abyss'. But it was also the centre of some of the great philanthropic movements of the time. Two of our greatest charities, the Salvation Army and Barnardo's, were set up within a few hundred yards of each other. Immigrant groups created self-help groups and wealthy benefactors built social housing for the poor. This is an astonishing walk through the heart of the old East End full of history and with some of the most extraordinary sights to be found in London from a Norman church to a 400 year old Jewish cemetery. We meet at 10.45 for 11am start at Costa Coffee, 275 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BY. It's right next to Whitechapel Tube
