About the event
The trans community is invited to celebrate an evening at the library that is dedicated to holding space to honour and recognize transgender and gender nonconforming people while acknowledging their contributions to society. Join in on fun activities including a mini speed friending event, playwright Karter Masuhara discussing the development of their new work, Do You Understand Me Now? and short film screenings with more to be announced soon, all to help raise awareness of the resiliency of transgender and gender nonconforming people. --- Karter Masuhara is a trans/non-binary artist, producer, and arts manager based in Vancouver on the occupied xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories. As an artist they have written and directed an award-winning short film, Where to Piss, which has been entered into multiple film festivals globally. They have also written and self-produced their own play, Before They Cut Down Our Tree, which was presented at the 2023 Vancouver Fringe Festival. They have co-produced the short film Dark Room (2025) and are co-writing the short film Baby Cafe (2026). Currently they are also developing their new multilingual solo piece, which will have a development presentation at Place des Arts. Karter has worked for a variety of artistic companies including Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre and the frank theatre, in administrative and producing roles with a focus on creating opportunities to uplift diverse voices. Karter has a Masters in Screenwriting from Leeds Beckett University. *In partnership with Playwrights Theatre Centre. --- Registration is required. This event is open to anyone who identifies as part of the 2STGD (Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse) community, their friends or partners and allies. This is an anti-oppressive, trans positive, scent reduced and accessible safer space. --- Accessibility: VPL is committed to making our programs accessible for all.
