Provenance, politics and the history of collecting: 19th-century German art in the collection of the National Gallery

Monday, November 9, 202617:00 – 19:00About the event
Ahead of next year’s exhibition, ‘German Expressionism: Modern Painting 1900-1918' , this talk examines what came before the groundbreaking movement. What examples of 19th-century German painting do we find in the National Gallery? And what do these objects tell us about the history of European art, about the growth of the Gallery’s collection, and about political developments between Britain and Germany in the turbulent years since the Gallery’s founding? The talk will be followed by a one hour drinks reception.
