Tula.Verse is an Afrofuturist retelling of the story of the Curaçaoan resistance (named after freedom fighter Tula) by means of music, spoken word, theatre and visual art. Creator Vernon Chatlein invites you to question the archives and existing narratives by exploring the echoes of the Caribbean uprisings against the colonial regime together. A performance by Vernon Chatlein/Quinsy Gario/Amber Nijman/Rachel Rumai. This is a story of sœurité (sisterhood)
The story of resistance leaders Agatha and Maria begins with the uprising at the Santa Maria plantation (Curaçao, 1716). Dozens of enslaved people storm the house of the plantation overseer (the factor) and murder him, the law enforcer (the rider of the WIC) and his wife. The factor's wife fled with her children and later declares that she had seen a bloodied enslaved person enter Maria's house.
Maria is said to have incited the murder of the factor out of revenge, because he had been responsible for the death of her previous husband. As soon as news of the events reaches Willemstad, a manhunt is launched…
How does the story of Maria and Agatha (September 1716) relate to the story of the great uprising of Tula and his men in 1783?
About Tula
Tula, also known as “Rigaud”, was the leader of the largest slave uprising in Dutch colonial history. On 17 August 1795, at the Knip plantation, he led a peaceful uprising together with some 40 to 50 enslaved people to demand freedom. His struggle became a symbol of resistance and justice. In 2010, he was declared a national hero of Curaçao, and in 2023, he was rehabilitated in the Netherlands as a resistance hero.
