Melbourne Star: Turn on the Lights

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel

About the event

The Melbourne Star is switching its lights back on, marking the most visible milestone yet in the major engineering and refurbishment project to get the Docklands monument spinning again. Unlit since 6 September 2021, the lights returning will be the first public sign of the extensive work taking place behind the scenes to bring the Melbourne Star back to life safely and carefully. The relighting will restore one of Docklands’ most recognisable night-time features, giving Melburnians a visible sign of momentum in the precinct as preparations continue for passenger operations in 2026. The original system has been fully replaced with an entirely new lighting network capable of full-colour animation and synchronised sequences, meaning the Star can now be programmed to light up for events, seasons and moments that matter to the city, in a way it never could before.
