Vineyard Hills Hike in Weinviertel

Join a small group of like-minded hikers for a beginner-friendly autumn hike through the vineyard hills and winemaking towns of the Weinviertel wine region on Saturday, October 3.
We’ll start our day hike from Wien Leopoldau (U1) station, taking a train and bus through Lower Austria to the wine town of Poysdorf, where we’ll begin our hike. From Poysdorf, we’ll head north towards Falkenstein, walking through atmospheric wine cellar lanes, numerous vineyard hills, local wineries (Weingüter) and inviting taverns (Heuriger) — a cultural landscape deeply shaped by centuries of viticulture.
In Falkenstein, we’ll explore the town and visit several panoramic viewpoints, including the ruins of medieval hilltop Falkenstein Castle. After some sightseeing, we’ll stop for lunch at sieben:schläfer (12:30), a local restaurant serving regional dishes and wines in the picturesque Oagossn wine cellar lane.
After lunch, we’ll continue to Galgenberg hill (425 m), the highest point of our hike, offering panoramic views over Falkenstein and the surrounding Weinviertel landscape. We’ll then descend towards Poysdorf, following scenic paths and roads through the vineyards, before taking the bus back to Vienna.
🌄 WHAT TO EXPECT We’ll start our day hike in the wine town of Poysdorf and head north towards Falkenstein, following a scenic route through the vineyard hills and traditional wine villages of the Weinviertel. Along the way, we’ll explore historic wine cellar lanes, local wineries and panoramic viewpoints before stopping for lunch in Falkenstein. After lunch, we’ll continue through the vineyards to Galgenberg before descending back towards Poysdorf for our journey back to Vienna. 🤔 FITNESS REQUIREMENTS: MODERATE 🔵 This hike requires a moderate level of endurance. You should be able to complete a 20–25 km route with around 400–800 m of elevation gain and descent. Some previous hiking experience is recommended.
