About the event

This is NOT an online meeting but an in-person meeting. Meeting in English. Reading the book is not required.

During the book discussion the leader of the discussion presents the most interesting parts of the book. The great emphasis is placed on discussion.

Book Description What does it actually mean to be free?

In the first part of *[The Constitution of Liberty](https://www.goodreads.com/pl/book/show/1044658.The_Constitution_of_Liberty)*, Friedrich A. Hayek develops his understanding of individual freedom and examines what makes a person genuinely free. For Hayek, freedom is not simply the ability to do whatever one wants. It is closely connected to the absence of arbitrary coercion and to the ability to make decisions and pursue one's own plans without being subject to another person's will.

Hayek distinguishes freedom from concepts that are often associated with it, including power, wealth, equality, and the ability to achieve particular outcomes. He also explores the relationship between freedom and responsibility: being free means not only having choices, but also living with the consequences of one's decisions.

The discussion will focus on the philosophical foundations of Hayek's argument rather than on the later institutional and economic parts of the book. This gives us an opportunity to examine one of the central questions of political philosophy: what kind of freedom should a society protect?

At this event, we'll use Hayek's arguments as a starting point for a broader discussion about individual freedom, coercion, responsibility, choice, equality, and the relationship between freedom and power.

Discussion Topics

• What does Hayek mean by individual freedom? • Is freedom primarily the absence of coercion, or should it include the ability to actually achieve one's goals? • What counts as coercion, and where should we draw the line? • Can someone be legally free but nevertheless not meaningfully free? • What is the relationship between freedom and personal responsibility? • Is having more choices necessarily the same as having more freedom? • How should we think about the relationship between freedom and equality? • Can one person's freedom legitimately restrict another person's freedom?
