Suits & Sneakers presents: “How to Lead Your Business Through Its Next Stage of Growth" with Brett Matheson
About the event
Suits & Sneakers hosts several events in Cape Town each month, each featuring a different guest and theme. The idea is to create a space for ongoing learning that helps you broaden your thinking in a fast-changing world. This event takes place on the evening of Wednesday, 14 October. Doors open at 17:00 for food, drinks and networking, with the main event running from 18:30 to 20:00. WHAT IS THIS EVENT ALL ABOUT?One of the many tough things about growing a business is that your role keeps changing as the business gets bigger. In the early days, you are usually involved in almost everything. You make the decisions, solve the problems and keep a close eye on what is happening. But as the business grows, that way of operating becomes harder to maintain. You have to start handing things over, trusting other people, spending less time doing and more time leading, and figuring out where your attention is actually needed. None of those shifts are particularly easy, and it is not always obvious when your role needs to change or what the next version of your role should look like. On Wednesday, 14 October, scaling coach and Suits & Sneakers member Brett Matheson joins us to explore exactly that. Brett has spent the past decade working with more than 350 business owners across 20 countries and has seen many of the same challenges appear as businesses move from one stage of growth to the next. During a 30-minute talk, followed by a fireside conversation with Mark Sham and questions from the audience, Brett will explore some of the questions business owners eventually have to wrestle with: When does your role need to change? How do you recognise when the way you have been running the business is no longer what the next stage requires? What should you stop doing yourself? How do you start handing over responsibility without feeling as though you are losing control of the business you built? How fast should you grow? How do you pursue new opportunities without moving faster than you, your team or the business can handle? What needs to change in you? How do your habits, confidence, identity and ego affect the way you lead as the business gets bigger? The goal of the evening is not to give you a magic formula for scaling a business. It is to help you understand where your business is now, what the next stage may require from you, and how your role may need to change as you grow. The evening also marks the launch of Brett’s new book, The Scaling Founder: A Journey of Incompetence. There is also a full-circle connection to Suits & Sneakers. Brett made the decision to turn his original writing into a book after attending a Suits & Sneakers event featuring Daniel Priestley. On 14 October, he comes back to the community to launch the finished book and share the thinking behind it.
