This session traces the history of female clowning, examining its major manifestations and recent artistic developments. Featured will be artistic projects, festivals and gatherings that have expanded opportunities for women clowns in performance, employment and income generation. Female Clowning Networks represent an alternative professional structure, functioning as mutual support, social infrastructure and a vehicle for political engagement. Drawing on these elements, the discussion will map key themes in female clowning practice before opening to audience participation.
