A TALE OF TWO SISTERS begins with Su-mi’s (Im Soo-jung) return home from her time away at a mental institution, and her homecoming is less than ideal. Her heavily medicated stepmother Eun-joo (Yum Jung-ah) rules the house, erratic and violent, she often terrified her younger sister Su-yeon (Moon Geun-young). However, their stepmother is not the only one wreaking havoc in their home: the ghost of their mother also haunts them in the evenings, fragmenting the barrier between what is real and what is psychosis. Korean New Wave spearhead Kim Jee-woon’s diabolical fairy tale is filled with twists and turns. A TALE OF TWO SISTERS is an achingly haunted tale of sisterhood, evil stepmothers, and deadbeat dads. A luscious slow burn, the film to this day remains one of the most affecting Korean horror films of all time. What is girlhood without a little bit of insanity?
