10 years after the release of Vol. 1, BROS are returning to where it all began. A decade after celebrating the album’s original release at Toronto’s Lula Lounge, the band returns to the very same stage for their first live performance in years. One night only, 10 years in the making.
BROS is the technicolor side-hustle of Ewan and Shamus Currie, best known as the frontline engines of Saskatoon rock n roll outfit the Sheepdogs. Together as BROS they dive headfirst into the lush, widescreen studio pop of the mid-70s, blending classic AM melody making with Brazilian percussion and cinematic soul. It’s music built on a foundation of immaculate vibes and top-tier craftsmanship, operating under the correct assumption that a perfectly placed horn swell or an unexpected flute solo can deliver salvation. They aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel; they’re just reminding you that the wheel used to spin a whole lot smoother when the music was fun, joyful and lovingly devoted to the sacred art of the groove.
There’s a particular kind of record that only happens when musicians stop worrying about what they’re supposed to sound like. Vol. 1 was that record for BROS: a place for Ewan and Shamus to follow their instincts outside the boundaries of the band they were already known for.
The album quickly found a life of its own. “Tell Me” reached the Top 20 at Alternative radio and became the long-running, instantly recognizable theme for CBC’s Q with Tom Power, while Vol. 1 has gone on to garner more than 30 million streams worldwide and develop a cult-like following over the decade since its release.
Now, ten years later, BROS are celebrating Vol. 1 with a special 10th anniversary reissue, returning the album to vinyl for the first time in years. A decade on, it still sounds joyful, strange, meticulously crafted and completely unconcerned with what it was supposed to be.
