MIS's monthly Film and Psychoanalysis Series, produced in partnership with Folha de São Paulo and the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of São Paulo (SBPSP), pairs a screening with discussion moderated by Luciana Saddi, coordinator of the Film and Psychoanalysis Program at SBPSP's Culture Directorate. Discussions are recorded and later posted to MIS's official YouTube channel. August's program features the documentary "Outsider. Freud" by Israeli filmmaker Yair Qedar. Internationally awarded, the feature combines extensive archival research with interviews from leading psychoanalysts to examine Sigmund Freud's life and legacy from a contemporary perspective. The film won the Gradiva Award 2025 and has screened in over twenty countries and at major institutions including the Freud Museums of Vienna and London. Following the screening, psychoanalyst Leopold Nosek and writer and psychoanalyst Paulo Schiller will participate in a discussion. About the film Outsider. Freud (dir. Yair Qedar, 2025, 66 min, Israel/Austria/Germany, 12 years) A four-act journey through Sigmund Freud's life and work, combining animation, dreams, and reflections from leading psychoanalysts. The film explores Freud's experience as a marginalized Jew in Vienna during Hitler's rise and how this condition shaped his theories and personal life. Through an intimate lens, the documentary reveals new dimensions of Freud's legacy, emphasizing his contributions to psychoanalysis, his relationship with Judaism, and the power dynamics of being an "outsider". The film is directed by Yair Qedar, an award-winning filmmaker and social activist specializing in literary biographical documentaries. Over the past 14 years, through the documentary series "The Hebrews", he has directed and produced 19 films dedicated to major Jewish and Hebrew-language writers. Qedar has developed a distinctive cinematic language combining deep archival research, innovative animation, and original soundtracks. About the guests Leopold Nosek is a psychoanalyst, full member and training analyst at the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of São Paulo (SBPSP). He has authored numerous articles and book chapters published in national and international journals and periodicals, as well as "A disposição para o assombro" (Editora Perspectiva, 2017) and "O método Marlow: estudos indisciplinares em psicanálise" (Editora Perspectiva, 2025). He edited "Álbum de família: imagens, fontes e ideias da psicanálise em São Paulo" (Casa do Psicólogo, 1994). He served as editor of Revista Ide and Revista Brasileira de Psicanálise and was among the founders of the Latin American journal Calibán. In 2014, he received the Sigourney Award in recognition of his clinical and institutional work and efforts to connect psychoanalysis with culture, politics, and the arts. Among his many contributions to psychoanalysis, he has served as president of SBPSP, FEBRAPSI, and the Psychoanalytic Federation of Latin America (FEPAL). Paulo Schiller is a psychoanalyst, writer, and literary translator from Hungarian, English, and French. Known for his direct translations from German, he has translated into Portuguese fundamental works by Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, and Thomas Mann, as well as "Sátántangó" by 2025 Nobel Prize winner László Krasznahorkai. Paulo is also a pediatrician trained at the University of São Paulo (USP) and coordinated the Psychology and Psychoanalysis Service at the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Unifesp (GRAACC) for 12 years.
