Sign This ft. Santiago Vázquez & La Maquina afrogrooves presents
About the event
After the highly successful edition on July 11, Sign This returns to Cinetol for a special evening filled with fully improvised, danceable live music. This edition is extra special: Santiago Vázquez, the Argentine creator of the musical sign language Rhythm and Percussion with Signs, will be personally present and conduct the band. A rich, layered and energetic sound
Although this system was originally developed for percussion, Afrogrooves applies it to a complete afrobeat band, resulting in a rich, layered, and energetic sound in which afrobeat, funk, jazz, and improvisation merge. No two performances are ever the same. Under his direction, Afrogrooves creates a unique musical journey on the spot, in which grooves, breaks, and compositions emerge spontaneously – without a setlist, driven entirely by hand gestures. Although this system was originally developed for percussion, Afrogrooves applies it to a complete afrobeat band, creating a rich, layered, and energetic sound in which afrobeat, funk, jazz, and improvisation come together. No concert is the same.
La Maquina, the Hague-based percussion ensemble led by Iván Gianakis, is also part of this special evening. With thirteen percussionists, instruments from all corners of the world, and the same sign language, Rhythm and Percussion with Sign Language, La Maquina presents a hypnotic mix of traditional rhythms, modern grooves, and collective improvisation. The meeting between both ensembles and Santiago Vázquez promises to be a unique musical experience.
Sign This is a project by Stichting Afrogrooves, in collaboration with Stichting Rhythm With Signs NL, and is part of a concert series in which the power of improvisation, rhythm, and musical connection takes center stage.
