Gallery Conversation: Beyond Form—Abstraction at Midcentury
About the event
Following World War II, artists across the globe turned to the expressive power of abstraction to grapple with their new realities. Moving away from realism and figuration, they experimented with color, form, shape, and gestural mark-making to pursue innovative aesthetic and conceptual possibilities. Many artists also encountered opportunities for collaboration through artist-run collectives and workshops.
Join Chloé Glass, research associate in Prints and Drawings and co-curator of Beyond Form: Abstraction at Midcentury, for a conversation about the exhibition's many experimental and collaborative artworks. The aesthetic and formal qualities of the works will be highlighted through sustained close looking and connected with the biography of the artists.
