Vivaldi's Gloria was written for the girls at the Pietà orphanage in Venice, where Vivaldi served as music director. The work fell into obscurity for two centuries before being rediscovered in the 1920s in a pile of forgotten manuscripts. The sunny character of the Gloria, with its distinctive melodies and rhythms, is typical of all Vivaldi's music and gives it an immediate and universal appeal. Today it is a firm favourite with choirs and audiences the world over.
Handel's vivid and energetic Dixit Dominus was written for an Italian patron when the composer was just twenty-two and living in Rome. This unique and inventive setting of Psalm 110 is an extraordinary bull's-eye from a young composer, displaying Handel's early mastery of counterpoint, harmonic and melodic invention and – perhaps most impressively – of forceful dramatic expression. It is regarded as one of his finest works.
