FORMAT: IN-PERSON GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Introduce participants to the concept of heritage and Cultural Heritage Stewardship, recognizing the strength and potential of Mosteiro da Luz, unveiling the universe of constructive techniques employed in it and ancestral knowledge that has been lost over the development of new construction techniques. In this organic learning, we will discuss vernacular techniques, an important subject for debating sustainability and the role of constructions and humans in cities, in the context of climate emergencies. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Present the concept of heritage and Cultural Heritage Stewardship; Contextualize Mosteiro da Luz: its history, its architecture and its role in contemporary São Paulo; Show the materials used for the construction of Mosteiro da Luz, their knowledge and practices, their manufacturing techniques, assemblies and ways of preserving them through maintenance actions in space-time; Conduct discussions about vernacular architecture, sustainability and the place of heritage in the city as a catalyst for teachings, cultures, visibility of erasures and empowerment CONTENT: September 11, 2026, CLASS 1 – Awareness: Building Heritage In this initial meeting, we will investigate the history of Mosteiro da Luz, headquarters of the Museum of Sacred Art of São Paulo, and the role of heritage in the contemporary city. We will discuss Cultural Heritage Stewardship as a tool to expand traditional historical narrative (often restricted to the version of the victors), bringing to light memories and voices once marginalized. September 18, 2026, CLASS 3 – Materials: Mortar in heritage We will understand the logic of minerals and stones as consolidators of construction, acting from the robustness of foundations to the ornamental lightness of altars and adornments. From this universe, we will study Lime as the protagonist of one of the most present vernacular techniques in historical buildings: lime mortar. The practical activity will consist of producing lime mortar, exploring different aggregates and pigments. September 25, 2026, CLASS 2 – Materials: Earth in heritage Dedicated to the universe of earth as an element of support and production. We will explore traditional constructive techniques present in the building of Mosteiro da Luz, such as Taipa de Mão, Taipa de Pilão and Adobe, understanding how this knowledge can be experienced and perpetuated today. In the practical part, we will make miniature Taipa de Mão walls to deepen understanding of the technique. October 2, 2026, CLASS 4 – Materials: Wood in heritage At the end of the course, we will present the diverse faces of wood, an ancient material that, in the Mosteiro and Museum, connects directly to earth, stone and mortar. From natural environment to cultural context, we will analyze its importance, uses and protection methods in structures, ceilings, floors, frames and in the collection itself. As practice, we will perform hydration and pigmentation actions on wooden pieces to understand their properties.
