Female Figures and Fungi: A foray into the mycological past
About the event
Beyond its botanical treasures, Kew Gardens’ Library and Archives is home to one of the world’s largest collections of mycological literature, art and archive material. Our latest exhibition digs into this extensive collection to showcase the lives and careers of pioneering women in mycology, the study of fungi. Discover the work of trailblazers like Elsie Wakefield (18861972), the first female head of mycology at Kew; enjoy exquisite watercolours by artists Emma Amy Rea (1865-1927) and Ray Cowell (1938-2010); and explore the forgotten scientific career of Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). Rare books, original illustrations, personal notebooks and letters are featured – many on display for the first time. Join us on Friday 7 August at 11am for a free, ticketed talk to uncover more about the lives and careers of the remarkable women featured in the exhibition. Book tickets to the show and tell event ‘Female Figures and Fungi’ is curated by the Library Graduate Trainee, Irene Szmelter, and the Archives Graduate Trainee, Alice Munday. You do not need to enter the Gardens or buy a ticket to view this display. The Herbarium building is located outside of the main garden site and gates. Come to the reception in the Herbarium building on the north side of Kew Green and you will be directed up to the Reading Room on the first floor.
