Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Summer Fair

Tower Hamlets Cemetery, one of the famed ‘Magnificent Seven’ London cemeteries of the Victorian era, opened in 1841 to ease overcrowding in smaller parish graveyards. After approximately 350,000 burials, it was closed in 1966. Fast forward 60 years to today, and it has become a hub of heritage, community and nature in the heart of the old East End-a tranquil nature reserve and designated Metropolitan Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), it is recognised as a critical site for maintaining London biodiversity, and therefore protected against development. Weathered tombstones and monuments to paupers and celebrities of Victorian yesteryear are squeezed between winding forest paths and grassy shaded clearings, fallen trees are repurposed to provide optimal environments for biodiverse wildlife, and local group Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery-the same group whose community action in the 90s prevented councils from removing thousands of memorials documenting the local people who lived and died in the area-put on dozens of events each year that emphasize connections between community, creativity and landscape, such as grave symbolism tours, festival flower headband making workshops, bug safaris, monthly craft drop-ins, food foraging walks, nature inspired embroidery classes and more-all of which are well worth attending as well so they're worth keeping an eye on! Their Summer Fair is a highlight of their calendar, with live folk music and theatre, craft stalls from local artists, food and drink stalls from local traders, guided tours by nature and heritage experts, and a few more surprises yet to be revealed! It runs from 12pm to 5pm, so we will meet outside nearby Mile End station at 11.45 and walk down, and if there is interest afterwards, we will head to one of the many nearby pubs to continue chatting! Entrance is free, but bring cash for snacks, drinks and stalls!
