Camila Nebbia Large Ensemble // Amir ElSaffar New Quartet // Immanuel Wilkins Quartet
About the event
The dynamic Berlin-based Argentine saxophonist and composer Camila Nebbia opens the second night of Jazzfest Berlin with the world premiere of this exciting new band, all accompanied by manipulated films shot by the artist or taken from her family archives. In her music Nebbia contemplates life-changing journeys, drawing inspiration from the unpublished memoir of her great-grandfather, who left his native Lebanon for a new life in South America. Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar plays second, presenting the latest iteration of his long-time investigation of Iraqi maqam tradition filtered through the improvisation lens of smoldering post-bop and microtonality. The evening concludes with a set by saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, a deep-thinking, wildly versatile New York-based reedist, and his explosive quartet on the heels of an acclaimed series of hard-swinging live albums.
