About the event

Almost every political movement comes with a group to blame. The rich. The poor. Immigrants. Corporations. The elites. Whichever side you look at, there's usually someone held responsible, and an unspoken promise that things would be better if they had less power.

Some of this is just how politics works. You need something to push against. But sometimes it turns into something else. A fair criticism of a real problem becomes a story where one group is behind everything, where any evidence to the contrary just proves they're hiding it, and where getting rid of them would fix things rather than simply improve them.

This session is about that shift. Not which enemies are the real ones, but how the pattern works, and why it shows up almost everywhere.

Some of the questions we'll work through:

• Does every movement need an enemy, or only some of them? • What happens to a group that defines itself mainly by what it's against? • Why does the specific enemy often seem to matter less than having one at all? • Where's the line between blaming the right people and looking for someone to blame, and would you know which side of it you were on? • Why does this get worse in some periods than others?

Notice that the same few accusations keep coming back, whoever is making them: that a group takes without giving anything back, that they're corrupting young people, that they're quietly working together against everyone else. The examples that come to mind first are probably not the most useful ones to look at.

Our approach We look at how things work rather than arguing about how they should be. So the evening is about the pattern itself, not about settling which of today's enemies is the legitimate one.

Format:

• Guided discussion with clear analytical focus • \~120 minutes • Small group to ensure everyone can contribute

Note on RSVPs: For small group discussions, each person matters. Not showing up without updating your RSVP results in: 1st = warning, 2nd = waitlist, 3rd = removal from group. Please cancel in advance if plans change.
