Art, Creativity, and Immigrant Youth
About the event
Join us for a Humanities Washington talk with Dr. Lakeya Afolalu, assistant professor of language, literacy, and culture at the University of Washington. Dr. Afolalu explores how immigrant and transnational youth particularly girls of color, navigate life between languages, countries, and cultures. Drawing from her personal experiences, community-based work in South Seattle, and stories shared by young people, she highlights how the arts become a powerful tool for identity, self-expression, and belonging and invites participants to reflect on the experiences of young people in Washington and the important role creativity plays in building confidence, connection, and voice.
We thank our partners T.E.W. Foundation and Humanities Washington.
