Lecture: Battleship Potemkin (Silent w/ English Subtitles)

Note: The screening is preceded by a 25 minute lecture by film critic Kevin Toma, part of LAB111's Manufacturing Consent series. He’ll explore the ideas about cinema and propaganda behind its famous editing, place the film within the political context of the Soviet Union, and trace *Potemkin*’s enormous influence. He’ll also look at the many different soundtracks that have accompanied this originally silent film over the past hundred years.

In 1905, the crew of a Russian battleship refuse their rations of rotten meat, and a shipboard mutiny becomes the spark for an uprising in the port of Odessa. Eisenstein built the film as a demonstration of montage, the idea that meaning comes from the collision of shots rather than from any single one, and the technique reshaped how films everywhere were cut.
