English Book Club — The Vegetarian by Han Kang
About the event
This month our English-language reading group takes on *The Vegetarian* by Han Kang, the South Korean writer who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. Winner of the International Booker Prize, the novel begins with a quiet act of refusal: Yeong-hye decides to stop eating meat. What looks like a small, private choice unfolds into something far stranger and more unsettling — told through the eyes of the people around her as her transformation pulls at everything: desire, control, family, the body itself. Short, sharp and unforgettable, and made for a lively conversation. Come to share what you made of it, hear how differently others read it, and see the book through many pairs of eyes. Read it beforehand if you can — and if you didn't quite finish, come along anyway, you'll still get plenty out of the discussion (just mind the odd spoiler). The book is available in the shop, so you can pick up your copy from us whenever suits you. This edition is hosted by Dario, with Bruno. 📚 In English 🗓 Saturday, 3 October · 6 p.m. — and from now on, always the first Saturday of the month 📍 Metis Books & Café · Gleimstraße 21 · 10437 Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg) 🎟 Free — no ticket needed. We just kindly ask that you order something to eat or drink while you're here: it's what keeps these evenings (and the bookshop) alive — and there's no nicer way to talk books than over a coffee, a glass or a slice of our great cheesecake. RSVP here so we know how many seats to set out. New faces are always warmly welcome.
