A portrait of Argentinian sculptor Alberto Carlisky, who replaces his militant and journalistic life in Buenos Aires with his role as an assistant to Paris-based Cubist sculptor Ossip Zadkine, eventually becoming an artist himself. A brief but intimate portrait of a young Senegalese cook in a workers hostel finds her keen to travel through France but taking umbrage at the term ‘immigrant’. Christiane Diop, the first Black woman to run a major publishing house in Paris, is the subject of a portrait that also features Sophie Mondesir, a French illustrator of West Indian-Guadeloupean origin. The testimonies of Senegalese poet Léopold Sédar Senghor’s neighbours are intertwined with his poems and conversations about his life and career. And in Un homme, une terre, Sarah Maldoror and Aimé Césaire discuss surrealism, poetry and the future of Martinique, which he likens to a tree. Alberto Carlisky France. 1980. Sarah Maldoror. 4min.
