In 1976, Louis Andriessen released his composition Hoketus. The piece was a bombshell. No soft melodies, but hard-hitting rhythms, raw sounds, and hypnotic repetition. Hoketus laid the foundation for what would later become minimal music and electronic music. Its influence can be heard in genres ranging from minimal to techno. Ensemble Hoketus performs the original work live at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam.
A new composition that challenges the original
Michael Gordon, co-founder of the influential Bang on a Can collective from New York, is writing a mirror composition especially for this anniversary. His work confronts Andriessen's original.
