AUGUST: *El silenciero,* by Antonio Di Benedetto
At the August meeting of the Reading Club, we will discuss *El silenciero*, a novel by Argentine writer Antonio Di Benedetto that explores alienated ways of life in modernity.
With concise and restrained prose, *El silenciero* narrates the struggle of an individual against noise and the destructive effects noise can have on a life. The author warns us from the beginning that this story could take place in any Latin American city after the postwar period. Do cities necessarily become noisy when they grow and modernize? Is the hustle and bustle the price to pay for "progress"? Noise spreads and filters without respecting walls and boundaries, invading with its harshness the spaces of the home, the most intimate spaces of being and thought. Radios at full volume, televisions, mechanical workshops, nightclubs, loudspeakers, motorcycles, traffic and horns... For the silenciero, noise is a regime of constant interruption that distracts from the task of writing and is also the imposition of an alien life. But his struggle against noise will never manage to materialize into collective action, revealing itself as the narrative progresses—in an increasingly dreamlike and metaphysical tone—as solitary resistance to a way of life that fundamentally prevents him from being.
