Handel's Messiah by Maarten Engeltjes and PRJCT Amsterdam
About the event
What Bach's St Matthew Passion is to the Netherlands, Handel's Messiah is to England. Handel's immensely popular oratorio, full of musical imagination, is in the hands of PRJCT Amsterdam tonight, the baroque orchestra formed around countertenor Maarten Engeltjes. No musical wish remains unfulfilled when PRJCT Amsterdam takes the stage. Handel's Messiah
Handel, the most famous composer of his time, was for many years a man of the theater. He composed nearly forty operas and performed them in London with his own opera company. It was only as he grew older that the oratorio came into the picture. His Messiah is popular worldwide and means about as much in England as performances of the St Matthew Passion do in the Netherlands. This deeply inspired work, written in three weeks, is full of musical imagination that continues to fascinate.
Maarten Engeltjes and PRJCT Amsterdam
Maarten Engeltjes and his baroque orchestra PRJCT Amsterdam regularly visit the Grote Zaal. Their very first successful project at the Concertgebouw was 'Tranen van een moeder', featuring Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Last season, they performed Handel's Brockes-Passion. Now they remain with this composer with the Messiah. The press speaks of no wish remaining unfulfilled when PRJCT Amsterdam takes the stage.
