Act One: Standards & Survival
About the event
Actress and vocalist Marlo Vashti portrays Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald in a one-woman theatrical performance combining jazz, biography and dramatic storytelling. Presented on five dates from October 16 through October 31 at the Sandrell Rivers Theater, Act One: Standards & Survival is directed by Brittany King and accompanied by a live jazz band.
Rather than presenting a conventional tribute concert, the production moves between dramatized portraits of the three artists, exploring their music, personal struggles, ambitions and lasting influence. Vashti shifts among their distinct voices and stage personas while performing songs associated with each performer.
Presented in partnership with Fantasy Theatre Factory, the production runs October 16, 17, 18, 30 and 31. Tickets are $45 plus fees.
