Bixiga – Multicultural Territory in São Paulo (Heritage Journey 2026)

As part of the 2026 Heritage Journey, under the theme “São Paulo: Each Look, A Story”, Instituto Bixiga offers the course “Bixiga – Multicultural Territory in São Paulo”. This activity focuses on the Bixiga neighborhood and directly connects to the theme by exploring the multiple layers of memories and sociocultural meanings that shape this area. The course provides an immersion into the history of one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, revealing that beneath its image as an Italian quarter lie many other trajectories that form its local heritage. The link to the theme comes from recognizing that each group that has inhabited and still inhabits Bixiga — from Indigenous peoples and quilombolas to contemporary immigrants — brings a unique perspective that contributes to the metropolis's history. By investigating what happens “in every alley or behind every door,” the project responds to the Heritage Journey's invitation to reflect on the city's construction through the triad of people, spaces, and social practices, valuing heritage as the result of ongoing relationships between subjects and territories. Workload: 02 hours/class. Participants will receive certificates that can be used for Complementary Activities required by the National Curriculum Guidelines. *By enrolling in the course, the participant authorizes INSTITUTO BIXIGA – RESEARCH, TRAINING AND POPULAR CULTURE to use their images produced during the course (photographs and recordings) for promotional materials and publications of the institute or for other needs of this institution, without any material or immaterial cost, for an indefinite period.
