Dowland 400 Thomas Dunford & Jupiter
About the event
Thomas Dunford calls the English composer John Dowland the 'John Lennon of the 16th century'. And rightly so, for with his songs and the instrumental collection Lachrimae, or Seven Tears, he is still regarded as one of the most important English composers. Works that serve as pop songs, which contemporary artists also know how to handle – think of Sting's successful Dowland album Songs from the Labyrinth. Four hundred years after Dowland's death, the lutenist and leader of ensemble Jupiter presents the best of John Dowland. Come listen at Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. An ode full of poignant songs and moving instrumental works
To say John Dowland is to say Thomas Dunford. The lutenist, together with his ensemble Jupiter and guest soloists, produces one magnificent album after another. Gramophone called the latest CD, Songs of Passion, 'almost overwhelmingly good'. The same album received a 10 in Luister for its 'great understanding of this music'. Live, Dunford and Jupiter are unsurpassed in Dowland's work.
' Thomas Dunford's supple technique, combined with his passion for jazz, allows him to embellish and develop written texts with an improvisatory freedom, casting a new light on early music... A true 'Eric Clapton' of the lute. 'Kate Bolton (BBC Magazine)
