Join us for an audio-described exploration of William Holman Hunt's dramatic Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece 'Rienzi vowing to obtain Justice for his Brother's Death', accompanied by a live musical response. Coinciding with the National Gallery's exhibition devoted to Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, this session offers an opportunity to explore another 19th-century artist's approach to storytelling, emotion and close observation. In this early Pre-Raphaelite work, Hunt depicts the moment when the young Roman politician Cola di Rienzi vows revenge for the death of his brother, creating a powerful scene of grief, justice and political unrest. Gallery Educator Katy Tarbard will guide visitors through a rich audio description of the painting, uncovering its vivid symbolism, intricate details and revolutionary themes. Together, participants will discover how Hunt's meticulous attention to the natural world and emotional intensity helped define the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Bringing another sensory dimension to the experience, composer and celloist, Nina Plapp, will then perform a bespoke response inspired directly by the painting. Designed especially for blind and partially sighted visitors, this event welcomes everyone interested in experiencing art in a deeper, more multi-sensory way. Sessions take place seated in front of the painting. Please meet in the advertised room, or at the Getty Entrance 15 minutes before the start time if you would like to be guided to the space.
