Beginner-Friendly No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Trial Class Have you ever wanted to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but felt nervous about starting? This is a beginner-friendly No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trial class for people who are new to Jiu-Jitsu, martial arts, or grappling. No experience is needed. You do not need a gi or uniform. Just wear comfortable athletic clothes such as a rash guard, T-shirt, shorts, or leggings. This is a No-Gi only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. This is also an existing No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class with regular members already training at this location. Even if the number of RSVPs on Meetup looks small, the class is not only based on Meetup attendees. Regular members already attend the class, so the actual class size may not be fully reflected on Meetup. Newcomers are welcome to join through this Meetup event and experience the class in a friendly and welcoming environment. In this class, we will focus on: • Basic body movement • Simple No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu techniques • Safe partner drills • Beginner-friendly grappling concepts • Learning how to train safely and respectfully This class is a great opportunity to experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a friendly and welcoming environment. The class will be taught in English, and Japanese support is also available. * Who is this for? This event is good for: • Complete beginners • People who want to try Jiu-Jitsu for the first time • People interested in self-defense • People looking for a new fitness activity • People who want to join a friendly martial arts community • People interested in No-Gi grappling You do not need any martial arts experience to join. * What to bring Please bring: • Comfortable workout clothes • Water • A towel • A positive attitude For safety, please avoid clothing with zippers, hard buttons, pockets with metal parts, or anything that could scratch your training partner. Please also remove jewelry, watches, necklaces, and sharp accessories before training. * Fees & Membership First trial class: Free Drop-in after the first trial: • General drop-in: $30 CAD • Student drop-in: $20 CAD Monthly membership: • Regular membership: $125 CAD/month • Student membership: $100 CAD/month Student pricing is available with a valid student ID. If you would like to train regularly and continue learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beyond drop-ins, monthly membership is recommended. * Important Note This Meetup event is open to newcomers who would like to try No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and experience the community. This is an existing No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class with regular members already training at this location. If you would like to continue training regularly after the trial class, regular membership is required. Membership gives you access to the regular No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Everyone is welcome, but please train safely, respectfully, and with good control. * About the Organizer Owner / Head Instructor: Hiroki Takaya Hiroki Takaya is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor originally from Japan and currently based in Vancouver. He graduated from Langara College in Canada and has over 7 years of experience in English education in Japan. He is also licensed to teach English at junior and senior high school levels in Japan. Hiroki is also the founder of Chit-Chat Canada, an English and Japanese language exchange Meetup community. Through Chit-chat Canada, he has created opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect, practice languages, and build community in Vancouver. He has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 8 years and was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in June 2026.
