Behind the Byline: Education in Washington
About the event
Washington aspires to top the charts in academic achievement and student outcomes. But the data and the lived experience of students and families show areas that need improvement. Join The Seattle Times’ Education Lab, state Superintendent Chris Reykdal, and other guests for an evening exploring what the state can do to elevate its education system.
State Superintendent Chris Reykdal, currently serving in his third term, has dedicated his career to ensuring all of Washington’s learners have equitable opportunities for a high-quality public education. With Chris’ leadership and advocacy, Washington has made significant investments in services for students with disabilities, added more career and technical education opportunities, increased student access to school meals, boosted the number of dual language programs beginning in elementary school, and much more during Chris’ tenure. In his free time, you can find Chris hiking, cheering on Washington’s sports teams, or seeing a movie with his wife, Kim, and young adult children, Carter and Kennedy.
Dahlia Bazzaz is an education reporter at The Seattle Times, where for the past 10 years she’s reported on everything from Seattle Public Schools to Supreme Court decisions. Her current beat focuses on how Washington prepares students for life after high school.
