Shakespeare and Windrush
About the event
What connects Shakespeare and the Windrush Generation? Join us in the candle-lit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for a celebration of the British Caribbean community and their contributions to theatre, performance and Shakespeare. When the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at England in 1948, Shakespeare had been dead for over 300 years. Yet stories of migration, belonging and identity link his work to the enduring legacy of the Windrush Generation. Join director and writer Robin Belfield (Twelfth Night or What You Will, Globe), award-winning director Tinuke Craig (The School for Scandal, RSC and The Big Life, Stratford East) and educator and writer Dr Wendy Lennon (Shakespeare, Race & Pedagogy: Early Modern Colonialism to the Windrush) for a conversation about inheritance and who shapes British culture. This event is part of the Shakespeare and Race Festival 2026.
