Agatha's Almanac
About the event
Director Amalie Atkins filmed her 90-year-old aunt Agatha for six years on a remote family farm in Manitoba, Canada. In this documentary, Agatha speaks candidly about her life, her quilts, and the generations who worked this land before her. Showing at De Balie Amsterdam. A life on a remote farm in Manitoba
Agatha is 90 years old and lives alone on the old family farm in Manitoba, Canada. She consciously chooses to stay there, far from the hustle and bustle. Her niece, director Amalie Atkins, followed her for six years with a 16mm camera. The result is an intimate documentary that takes you into the rhythm of a life closely connected to the land.
Quilts, seeds and memories of the past
Agatha speaks candidly about the choices that have shaped her. About the quilts she makes, her ingenuity, and the quiet pride in what her hands can do. Some of the seeds she keeps have been passed down through generations. They form a tangible connection to the ancestors who worked this land before her.
Documentary with a calm, observant gaze
Atkins films with an observational eye and lets Agatha tell her own story. No drama, but down-to-earth honesty. Agatha's Almanac invites you to pause for a moment to reflect on what it means to belong somewhere and how knowledge and memories are passed down from generation to generation.
