Exhibition: The Posters of Barcelona's Festa Major
About the event
La Mercè posters reflect the evolution of Barcelona’s Festa Major, as well as the city's cultural, social and artistic transformations. This show brings together the posters published since 1979, when La Mercè became a grassroots, participatory festival open to all citizens with the arrival of the democratic city councils. The first posters from that period, signed by artists and prestigious designers, offer different views of Barcelona and its festival: dances and fireworks, traditional culture figures, renovated urban spaces and other symbols that evoke the city's renewal. Over the years, the La Mercè posters have embraced new visual languages. The perspectives of the creators from disciplines like illustration, set design and audiovisuals have expanded the ways the festival is portrayed and offer an increasingly rich and diverse picture of Barcelona and its time. Beyond advertising the celebration, these posters are invaluable visual testimonies of each period. They show how every generation has reinterpreted the image of La Mercè and Barcelona, and today they are part of the city's visual memory.
