Curator's introduction: Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation
About the event
Join Rab MacGibbon, Bernays Associate Curator of British Paintings, for an introduction to Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation , a thought-provoking exhibition that brings together two artists separated by almost 250 years. For the first time, Thomas Gainsborough's celebrated Mr and Mrs Andrews (c.1750) is shown alongside Yinka Shonibare's provocative reimagining, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without their Heads (1998). In this introductory lecture, Rab will explore how Shonibare's work opens up new ways of seeing one of Britain's most iconic paintings, inviting audiences to reflect on questions of wealth, power, identity, land ownership and Britain's colonial past. Discover the fascinating story behind these two remarkable works and the rich dialogue that emerges when past and present are brought into conversation.
