Music for Clarinet, Oboe & Piano
About the event
Central to the musical collaboration of Carin Bam (oboe), Matthew Reid (clarinet) and Pieter van Zyl (piano) is the performance of two works by South African composers Neil Solomon (1932–2015) and Peter Klatzow (1945–2021). Klatzow’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano received its world premiere in 2008 at a concert at the Baxter Theatre, while Solomon’s Sonatina in E for Oboe and Piano was performed at a concert in 2012 celebrating his 80th birthday. The concert took place at Welgemeend Hall, only a few minutes’ walk from the composer’s home. On both occasions, the composers were present. While Klatzow is primarily remembered as a composer, Solomon was known principally as a teacher and pianist. Also included in the programme are a Nocturne and Waltz by Solomon, alongside a Nocturne and Waltz by Frédéric Chopin. The recital will conclude with Chopin’s Fourth Ballade – a work greatly admired by both Solomon and Klatzow.
