Documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi films life under and around Naples in 'Below the Clouds'. Archaeologists, firefighters and grave robbers move through underground tunnels at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Showing at De Balie, Amsterdam. A documentary about the hidden life beneath Naples
In Below the Clouds, director Gianfranco Rosi follows various people who move through underground Naples every day. Archaeologists uncover a Roman villa, firefighters investigate clandestine tunnels, and museum curators manage cellars full of art treasures. Rosi filmed for 3 years in the region around the Gulf of Naples and created a black-and-white documentary that blurs the line between past and present.
Living in the shadow of Vesuvius
The area around Vesuvius carries a heavy past. Layers of history are buried underground, where so-called tombaroli — tomb raiders — dig illegal tunnels in search of antique finds. Rosi shows how residents of the Gulf of Naples live with that constant threat of magma and potential eruption. His camera records all of this with a calm, poetic gaze.
Award-winning work by a celebrated documentary filmmaker
Gianfranco Rosi is known for documentaries such as Sacro GRA and Fuocoammare. With Below the Clouds, he won the Jury Prize at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The film can be seen at De Balie in Amsterdam. Are you interested? You can find more information about tickets via the link on this page.
