About the event

WALK DESCRIPTION: Come join 25+ of our members on these walks This walk takes in the beautiful Philip Island beaches around Newhaven and Cape Woolamai along with a stunning walk along the cliffs past Woolamai beach. The longer of the two walks will start in Newhaven at the base of the San Remo bridge. It will be low tide, and we will walk along the beach from Newhaven to Cleeland Bight Beach. We will walk through the sand dunes at the thinnest section of the island to the Woolamai surf beach car park and commence the Cape Woolamai circuit. The E/M walk involves a good bit of sand walking but offers great views of San Remo and distant views of the mainland. The beach should be firm depending on the timing of high tide, but some sections can be soft and will test your knees and ankles! If you have poles, bring them as they help in the soft sand. The shorter walk will commence at Cleeland Bight Beach and walk along the beach for a shorter distance and then continue as per the longer walk description to the start of the Cape Woolamai circuit. The hero section of this walk is the 8.8 km Cape Woolamai circuit which both groups will walk. The light Beacon at Cape Woolamai is the highest point (at 112 metres) on Phillip Island and offers 360-degree views across to the mainland and down the coast. The trail offers spectacular coastal and cliff face views and a beautiful bay beach at The Old Granite Quarry site. Woolamai Beach has some of the largest and most powerful waves in Australia. On the preview there were 3-4 metre swells building up and waves crashing spectacularly onto the rock faces at the foot of the Pinnacles, a series of high pink granite cliffs along the coast. The circuit commences at Cape Woolamai Beach car park and a 1km walk along the beach to Magiclands where there are stairs up to the clifftop track. The track offers stunning views and takes you past the Pinnacles lookout. As we follow the track to the beacon, Phillip Island’s highest point, we will enjoy the panoramic views of the coastline and the stunning rock formations of the cliffs with views across Phillip Island, San Remo, Kilcunda and beyond. We will then drop down and have look at the Old Granite Quarry site. The 8.8 km circuit finishes at Cape Woolamai car park where the bus will greet us. Both walks are relatively easy with some extended gradual climbs along a well-maintained cliff track. Please carry at least 2 litres of water and bring a change of shoes for the trip back. . DISTANCE(S): 11km and 15km . TOTAL ASCENT(S): 221m Rise and 221m Rise . GRADINGS: Easy and Easy/Medium Easy (E): Walking mostly on tracks or in open country, with possibly some stretches of light scrub. Few hills and adequate rest stops. Distances may be up to 15km in flat open terrain but will be shorter if scrub or significant hills are involved.

Easy/Medium (E/M): More consistent walking, mostly on tracks or in open country, but with some significant hills, probably some stretches of light scrub. Possibility of some rock hopping. Distances up to 19km but may be much shorter depending on the difficulty of the terrain. Reasonable lunch and rest stops. . PLEASE NOTE: Your RSVP on MeetUp lets us know who may be interested but does not add you to the booking list. To register and pay for the walk you must visit our clubrooms (details below).
