How did Vincent van Gogh become a world-famous artist? In the exhibition, you will discover the important role his family played in this and how the family collection grew into an impressive global collection. Discover the story behind the myth this summer.
The story behind the myth
Doubt. Setback. Pride. Triumph. The exhibition takes you through the personal dilemmas of Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo, sister-in-law Jo, and cousin Vincent, the later founder of the Van Gogh Museum. They preserved his work, organized exhibitions, and built his reputation. Without them, almost no one would know Vincent today.
Masterpieces
You will see masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum's collection, such as Almond Blossom and The Harvest, but also unknown gems. This exhibition is the ideal start to your visit to the Van Gogh Museum, where you discover the family behind the myth. For if Vincent had not received that unconditional support from his family, the museum would never have existed.
Please note: on Fridays, the museum is usually open until 9.00 pm, except on Friday 31 July and Friday 25 September 2026.
Free admission with a Museumcard and for young people under 18.
