A graduate of the University of Cape Town’s jazz program, he went on to complete a Master of Contemporary Performance at Berklee College of Music in Valencia, refining a sound that is both globally informed and distinctly personal. Bester’s career includes notable performances on some of South Africa’s most prominent stages. He was a member of the iconic pop-jazz group Mango Groove from 2009 to 2015, and he has also shared the stage with celebrated artists including Hugh Masekela, Lira, Loyiso Bala, Zolani Mahola, Buddy Wells, Schalk Joubert and Nomfundo Xaluva. His debut album, Now, Not Yet, introduces a project rooted in tension and possibility — navigating the space between where we are and where we aim to be. This duality drives his compositions: intricate rhythmic and harmonic landscapes anchored by clear, memorable melodies, opening space for dynamic interplay and spontaneous creation. Bester is joined by a powerhouse trio featuring Wesley Rustin on double bass and Jono Sweetman on drums. Drawing on jazz, rock, blues and world music influences, the band’s sound is expansive and immersive, pushing the boundaries of modern jazz while remaining deeply expressive and accessible.
