Philosophy & Soup: Gladiatrices — Shame or Spectacle?

Join us in Cedar Park for an informal philosophy discussion over homemade borscht. This time, we’ll look at the women who entered the Roman arena: the gladiatrices. Were they admired as courageous performers, treated as scandalous women violating their proper social role, or simply turned into spectacle for an audience hungry for something unusual? We’ll use Roman accounts of female fighters to explore broader philosophical questions: • Was courage considered a masculine virtue in Rome? • What happens when women perform roles society calls “unnatural”? • Why were elite Roman women fighting in public considered especially shameful? • Can entering the arena be an act of freedom if the arena itself is exploitative? • Were gladiatrices challenging Roman gender roles — or were they another product being sold to the crowd? • And who gets to decide whether a woman’s behavior is courageous, degrading, or improper? No background in Roman history or philosophy is required. Come curious, bring your opinions, and be prepared to argue politely over soup.
