Image, Archive and Reinvention: Conversation between Alice Yura and Rosângela Rennó

Part of the programming for the exhibition Alice Yura: um ato fotográfico, this conversation brings together Alice Yura and Rosângela Rennó, a key figure in contemporary Brazilian photography and an important reference for Alice's research. Drawing from different generations and artistic paths, the discussion examines processes of reproduction, circulation and creation of images drawn from photographic collections, exploring how archives, collections and existing photographs can be activated to produce new narratives, reconfigure memories and shift meanings. Moderated by exhibition curator Thierry Freitas, the event considers various artistic approaches to inherited, found or archived images. In Alice Yura's research, the family archive serves as a space for engaging with questions of ancestry, immigration and self-construction, while in Rosângela Rennó's work, public and private collections reveal mechanisms of visibility and erasure within image history. Through dialogue between distinct generations and experiences, the conversation reflects on ethical, poetic and political challenges involved in activating archives, as well as photography's potential to reinvent narratives and reshape our relationship with memory.
