Barragan’s Burbank in the San Fernando Valley is another coveted iconic Mexican restaurant like Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks. In past years Barragan’s had three locations. The original location was founded in 1961 in Echo Park by Ramon Barragan & his wife Josie. A second location closed in 2019 in Glendale and today only the Burbank location remains. Ramon passed away at age 94 in 2025. Ramon’s son, Armando Barragan, took over ownership in 2000. His sons, Armando Jr. and Michael, are also involved spanning four generations of the family legacy.

BARRAGAN’S EST. 1961 Ramon immigrated to Los Angeles from Nayarit, Mexico at age 16. He worked his way up from a dishwasher to a head chef before converting a tiny, 24-seat coffee shop into the original Barragan's Mexican Restaurant.
Over the decades, the family expanded the brand into a small regional chain famous for giant portions, strong margaritas, and classic Mexican-American comfort food like cocido (short rib soup) and hard-shell tacos.
Location Timeline: The original location opens in 1961 on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park (closed in 2013 when the family sold the property).
1981: A second location opens on Central Avenue in Glendale (closed in August 2019).
1985: The final location opens on Victory Boulevard in Burbank, which serves as their current standing flagship.
