About the event

What if the secret to a richer life was hiding in the ordinary? Two cultures, one Japanese and one Danish, have each arrived at a distinct way of finding beauty and meaning in daily life. Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy rooted in the acceptance of impermanence and imperfection, not as flaws to be overcome but as the very source of genuine beauty. It is a way of seeing that runs deeper than aesthetics, touching something closer to a Buddhist understanding of what it means to be fully present in a world where nothing lasts. Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian practice which is a deliberate cultivation of warmth, ease, and a particular quality of togetherness through light, food, unhurried time, and trusted company. Before we meet, take ten minutes to watch the two short videos below to gain a better understanding of the concepts. Wabi-Sabi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmHLYhxYVjA Hygge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk5ylfxiEbE We'll explore questions like: • Think of a space, a time of day, or a simple ritual that you find yourself returning to — not because it's productive or impressive, but because it quietly restores something in you. What is it, and what do you think it's actually giving you? • Think of an object you own that has aged, worn, or changed over time and become more meaningful because of it. What is it, and what does your attachment to it say about what you value? • When do you feel most genuinely at ease in the company of others? What conditions make that possible — and do you find yourself creating those conditions intentionally or does it tend to happen by chance? • After watching these two videos, is there something small and specific in your daily life that you would like to do differently — something you now see in a new light? • This is a small group and every seat matters. If something comes up, a heads up as early as you can manage is always appreciated. 📍 Where: Vancouver Public Library Central Branch / L6 North (690) Meeting Room (6th Floor - Room 690)
