PREMISE The upcoming 2026 *Resident Evil* film reboot offers a fresh, grounded take on the iconic survival horror franchise under the creative vision of writer and director Zach Cregger. Best known for directing the breakout 2022 horror hit *Barbarian*, Cregger has approached this film as a genuine love letter to the original video games. He designed the movie to mirror the intense pacing, vulnerability, and resource-management tension of the source material. Instead of a long, drawn-out narrative, Cregger structured the film to run a lean 95 minutes, playing out almost entirely as one continuous, relentless sequence that throws the audience into the chaos within the first few minutes.
The premise shifts the focus away from legendary game protagonists like Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine to explore the catastrophe from an outsider's perspective. Set in an alternate, contemporary timeline, the story takes place concurrently with the massive Raccoon City viral outbreak featured in the classic games. By framing the narrative around an ordinary citizen, the film serves as a peripheral story that reveals the wider, chaotic horrors unfolding throughout the city on its most infamous night, making the threat feel deeply immediate and terrifying.
The plot follows Bryan, an ordinary medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who is caught in the wrong place at the worst possible time. Late one snowy winter night, Bryan is driving through a dark mountain pass, tasked with delivering a critical container of organs to Raccoon General Hospital. A brief distraction causes him to accidentally strike a woman with his vehicle. As he rushes her to the medical facility for help, the T-Virus outbreak rapidly consumes the town, and the local citizens begin mutating into grotesque, violent creatures. Trapped inside a collapsing hospital, Bryan is forced into a non-stop, night-long race for survival through monster-infested corridors and crumbling city streets in a desperate bid to escape Raccoon City alive.
