Family Sundays at the Jameel: Shapes, Stories and Memories
About the event
All welcome, pre-registration required Join us for a special family day filled with activities at Jameel Arts Centre inspired by Salah Elmur’s solo exhibition titled Just as the Heart of a Mango is a Stone. The tour, led by the artist Salah Elmur, takes an in-depth look at the exhibition, delving into Elmur’s immersive world and artistic practice, particularly looking into storytelling, landscape, memory, identity through figures, abstraction, themes of family and Sudanese life. This engaging session invites families to explore the imaginative world of Salah Elmur through a variety of interactive, hands-on activities that connect art, collage, sculpture, photography and storytelling. The activities are free to attend and run all day to encourage and support creativity and imagination. Jameel Arts Centre strives to provide space for children to share stories, and to foster cultural awareness through artistic exploration that supports healthy child-development and growth. Family Sundays at the Jameel are suitable for all ages. All materials and step by step guides are provided. Children and families are invited to explore their own stories and connections through a range of self-led activities. Sensory Stations Sensory Memory Box Toddlers explore a collection of materials and objects connected to Sudanese environments. Through touch, smell and observation they engage with materials such as cardamom pods, hibiscus, dried fruits, fishing nets, river stones and more. Activities: Who are they? Inspired by Studio Kamal: Participants rummage through a box of photographs featuring printed identity cards, families and strangers. Using these images, children create collages and invent stories, placing the photographs within new backgrounds and the many stories they can inspire. A River of Stories Inspired by The Salt of the Earth: On a painted scroll of the Nile and Red Sea, children and families collaboratively build a living landscape by adding figures, animals, boats, plants and imagined stories. As the mural grows, they explore the relationships communities have with these waterways. Cubist Characters Inspired by To Appear Otherwise: Experimenting with Cubist ideas of rearranging and reimagining the human face, children create playful characters while exploring shape, colour and storytelling through portraiture inspired by Elmur’s distinct paintings. Clay Witnesses Inspired by The Witnesses/Gravestones: Children explore how objects can hold memories and tell stories. Inspired by Elmur’s wooden sculptures, participants create their own clay “witnesses,” small sculptural markers that represent a person, place, moment or story that is important to remember. Joining Family Sundays at the Jameel is Maison Tini’s Tini-preneurs Market. The market invites children to step into the role of entrepreneur, transforming their creativity into real-world experience. As part of Art Jameel’s Family Sundays programme, young makers aged 5–17 showcase and sell products they have designed, made or developed themselves, from handmade crafts and artwork to baked goods, jewellery, games and innovative creations. Tini-preneurs is an immersive learning experience that encourages confidence, creativity, communication and financial literacy. By interacting with customers, handling sales and sharing the stories behind their products, children gain valuable entrepreneurial and life skills in a supportive, family-friendly environment. Come and meet the next generation of creators, innovators and business owners, support their ideas, and discover something truly one of a kind. SEE ALL EVENTS
