
Artist-Led Masterclass: A Deeper Encounter with the Art Jameel Collection

Engage in this unique two-day masterclass offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes exploration of the Art Jameel Collection hosted by artist and educator Sana Waqar. For the first time, Jameel Arts Centre will open its Art Jameel Collection room to curious participants, offering a rare behind-the-scenes opportunity to discover how artworks are cared for, preserved and managed, as well as an exclusive look into how an exhibition is put together with works from the Art Jameel Collection. The programme offers an opportunity to understand collection management, care and conservation practices, as well as artist practices through both dialogue and making. The collection tour is followed by an in-depth exploration of the Artists’ Rooms exhibition, as well as our Collections Room. The workshop touches upon exhibition making while engaging closely with selected works by Lulua Alyahya, Walid Siti and Shehzad Dawood, examining their formal qualities, materials, techniques, cultural contexts and emotional resonance. The two day format follows the structure below: Day 1: Tour of the Art Jameel collection room: Discover how artworks are cared for, preserved and managed within a museum setting Explore conservation practices, documentation processes and artwork handling Understand the role of museums as cultural stewards Artists’ Rooms tour and discussion Engage in slow looking and close observation of artworks Explore personal interpretations through reflection and discussion Develop visual thinking through sketches and creative exercises Day 2: In-depth discussion; Lulua Alyahya, Walid Siti and Shehzad Dawood, Explore the artists’ practices, motivations and cultural contexts Examine materials, techniques and artistic processes Discuss contemporary interpretations and relevance of selected works Making and response: Experiment with materials and artistic methods inspired by the selected Collection artists Translate observations and ideas into personal creative responses Reinterpret artistic approaches through contemporary perspectives This two-day workshop blends together behind the scenes access, theory, critique and making, offering participants a rare opportunity to engage with the Art Jameel Collection from multiple perspectives, while exploring how artworks are cared for, presented and made. Fee: 500 AED inclusive of materials and refreshments About Sana Waqar Sana Waqar is a multidisciplinary artist from Pakistan, based in Dubai. With over ten years of training and experience in textile, fashion, and visual arts, Sana has participated in numerous art and design projects and gallery exhibitions, both locally and internationally. In 2019, she graduated with an MA in Art and Design Studies from Beaconhouse National University and later joined as a Teaching Associate in the School of Visual Arts and Design. Sana is passionate about decoding abstract imagery, mapping, data visualisation, and storytelling through colours, shapes, textures, and sounds. She has been part of the Campus Art Dubai 10.0 Programme as an Exhibitor Relations Assistant and later joined Jameel Arts Centre as a Learning Assistant. Sana has taught Patterning Practices as a visiting faculty member at BNU and is currently pursuing a specialisation in Teaching with Art from MoMA, New York.
