About the event

Movie discussion - watch beforehand. No screening. Short summary The first movie builds the Fellowship. The Two Towers asks what happens after it breaks. Everyone is scattered now. Frodo and Sam are carrying the burden into darker territory. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are pulled toward war. Merry and Pippin become more than comic relief. Rohan is collapsing under fear, grief, age, and bad counsel. And Gollum enters the story properly, which changes everything. This is the film where the adventure becomes harder to romanticize. The group is no longer together. The mission no longer feels clean. Loyalty starts happening at a distance, under pressure, without the comfort of everyone moving in the same direction. That’s why this one deserves a room. Not trivia. Not lore-flexing. Not everyone quoting the obvious lines and calling it a discussion. A real conversation about fellowship after separation, leadership under despair, corrupted desire, courage without certainty, and whether people can still belong to each other when the road splits. This is the film companion to the July 25 reading, but you do not need to have attended that reading. Just watch the movie beforehand. A few questions already sitting in my head • “Can a fellowship survive once everyone is forced onto different roads?” • “Who carries the heaviest burden in this film: Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Théoden, Éowyn, or Gollum?” • “Does Frodo become wiser in this movie, or just more isolated?” • “Is Gollum pitiable, dangerous, funny, tragic, or all of those at once?” • “What does Sam understand about loyalty that the more heroic characters sometimes miss?” • “Is Aragorn a natural king here, or someone still trying to grow into the idea?” • “Why does Rohan feel so emotionally different from the world of the first film?” • “Does the film make war feel noble, horrifying, necessary, or too beautiful for its own good?” How the afternoon will go We’ll start with one question: “What part of this movie feels heavier than you remembered?” Then we’ll stay close to the film: Frodo and Sam, Gollum, Rohan, Aragorn, Helm’s Deep, Merry and Pippin, the Ents, and the way the story keeps asking what loyalty looks like when people are no longer side by side. Full spoilers are expected. Come having watched the movie recently enough to talk about the film itself, not just your memory of loving it. No lore-flexing. No book-versus-movie derailment for the whole room. No fantasy trivia contest. A real discussion. When and where 🗓️ Date: Sunday, August 30th, 2026 🕒 Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM 📍 Location: Vancouver Central Library 350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC 9th floor, left of the elevators when you exit. Cap 12 + waitlist. Small room on purpose so it stays a real conversation. Come ready to talk about the middle chapter like it is doing more than moving pieces into place. Weekend RSVP policy Our weekend events regularly have waitlists of 20 or more people. If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP by Thursday evening. This gives someone on the waitlist enough time to make plans and take the available spot. Members who remain marked as attending and miss two events without cancelling may be removed from the group. Emergencies happen; if something unavoidable comes up, please message the organizer. Keeping your RSVP accurate helps limited seats go to people who can actually attend.
